Humour is an act of aggression

Humour is an act of aggression / Health

If you thought laughter brings people closer, or a good joke can thaw a relationship - here’s some new research that’s quite in the contrary. A German academic, who sees humour as an act of aggression, believes that humor only reinforces social inequalities. And those people who make others laugh think they are higher up the social ladder than their audiences.

Gerard Butler: Scottish Heartthrob

Gerard Butler: Scottish Heartthrob / Cinema

Gerard Butler is a foul-mouthed rake who bangs everything in sight. (Gerard Butler is a charming, unpretentious guy who is irresistibly huggable!) He’s a drunk. (Reformed!) And a hellion. (When he’s not saving boys from drowning!) Movie critics abhor him. (But audiences love him!) And you don’t know the half of it.

Spartan Workout Secrets from the Star of 300

Spartan Workout Secrets from the Star of 300 / For men

To become fit for a king, 300 star Gerard Butler trained harder than most pro athletes for 4 months straight.

To become King Leonidas, Butler, who by his own admission was in less-than-ideal shape when he was tapped for the starring role in 300, spent 4 months transforming both his body and his mind. Early on, it became an all-consuming task.

What modern women want: a beta male

What modern women want: a beta male / For women

Last week I went to dinner with an eligible doctor. As we were finishing the main course, I struck up conversation with the owner (Marco) in Italian – I speak five languages. My date nearly choked on his linguini and spent the rest of the date mute.

The Carnival of Love in Dnipropetrovsk

The Carnival of Love in Dnipropetrovsk / Lifetime

The Brazilian carnivals are more about samba and music whereas the Ukrainian Karnaval Liubvi is about beautiful girls and their wedding gowns.

This is the second time that the Karnaval Liubvi has taken place in Dnipropetrovsk. The city celebrated The Youth Day by taking part in the Carnival of Love.

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland / The UK

Oh, that mystic Scotland, the motherland of ghosts that love to live in castles…and surely they live in the most famous castle – The Edinburgh Castle! Even if there are no real ghosts in it, we know for sure that the apparitions of history are still living there.

Hay fever: Face your Enemy

Hay fever: Face your Enemy / Nature

Hay fever sufferers can now see the face of their invisible enemy - thanks to these Scanning Electron Microscope images of pollen grains. A Swiss scientists named Martin Oeggerli, who uses the name Micronaut for his art, uses a Scanning Electron Microscope in his cellar to capture images of pollen grains.

How Quentin and Martha Messed Up the World

How Quentin and Martha Messed Up the World / Opinion

The other day, on the short walk to my office from the car lot where I park, it struck me that both Quentin Tarantino and Martha Stewart are twenty-first-century Frankenstein monsters.

Does the World Need 3D TV?

Does the World Need 3D TV? / Technology

Stand back from the TVs folks, because 3D is comin’ atcha. Hollywood has scored big over the past year with 3D movies, and now both Hollywood and the consumer electronics industry want to put 3D in your living room.

To live the life of your dream!

To live the life of your dream! / Lifetime

Dedicated to all who aspire, aim high in life or simply have a dream.

Life is full of examples and stories of people who used to dream but never achieved what they wanted. Why? Many just consider dreams to be in the realm of theory and not practice and never make a step towards their dream.

I teach my child English: It’s a go-to-the-park day!

I teach my child English: It’s a go-to-the-park day! / English for kids

Kids love to be outside. No need to worry that they will get bored. There are so many things to do – to run after a kitty, to shoo a flock of pigeons, to dig their little fingers into the sand in the sandbox, to have a go on the slide and swing! Parents need to keep up the pace and probably to update their English vocabulary – to be able to respond in every possible situation.

One day the man wakes up and finds that he does not feel like going to work. He is not sick, exactly; he just doesn’t feel like going to work. He calls the office and makes an excuse, then he pours himself a bowl of cereal and sits down in front of the television.
