Names for the decade. How to name the time we live in / Vocabulary
The 2000s
During the decade of the 2000s, a universally accepted name for the decade was never really accepted in the English-speaking world, as it had been for previous decades such as the '90s, the '80s, etc.
Beginning in 2010 however, as more and more people found themselves needing some point of reference when speaking of the previous decade, to “the two-thousands” started to become more common in everyday speech, and seems to make sense in terms of ease of use and comprehension, especially when compared to some of the more inane suggestions such as “the noughties” or “the ohs.”
Orthographically, the decade can be written as the "2000s" or the "'00s". Some people read "2000s" as "two-thousands", and thus simply refer to the decade as the "two-thousands". Some read it as the "00s" (pronounced "Ohs", "Oh Ohs", "Double Ohs" or "Oos"). The single years within the decade are usually referred to as starting with ...
