The Large Hadron Collider: Reload / Science

добавить комментарий посмотреть в журнальном виде

For the past few decades, physicists have been able to describe with increasing detail the fundamental particles that make up the Universe and the interactions between them. This understanding is encapsulated in the Standard Model of particle physics, but it contains gaps and cannot tell us the whole story. To fill in the missing knowledge requires experimental data, and the next big step to achieving this is with the Large Hadron Colider. The LHC is the latest and most powerful in a series of particle accelerators that, over the last 70 years, have allowed us to penetrate deeper and deeper into the heart of matter and further and further back in time. The next steps in the journey will bring new knowledge about the beginning of our Universe and how it works, as the LHC recreates, on a microscale, conditions that existed billionths of a second after the birth of our Universe. That will let us see how matter behaved a tiny fraction of a second after the Big Bang.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, intended to collide opposing beams of protons or lead ions, each moving at approximately 99.999999% of the speed of light. It is used by physicists to study the smallest known particles – the fundamental building blocks of all things. It is expected to revolutionise our understanding, from the minuscule world deep within atoms to the vastness of the Universe.

The LHC was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) with the intention of testing various predictions of high-energy physics, including the existence of the hypothesised Higgs boson, a subatomic particle that is theorized to be responsible for the existence of mass, and of the large family of new particles predicted by supersymmetry. 27 kilometres in circumference, it lies underneath the Franco-Swiss border between the Jura Mountains and the Alps near Geneva, Switzerland. It is funded by and built in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and engineers from over 100 countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.

On 10 September 2008, the proton beams called ‘hadrons’ – either protons or lead ions – were successfully circulated in the main ring of the LHC for the first time. Physicists wanted to recreate the conditions just after the Big Bang, by colliding the two beams head-on at very high energy. The collider has been cooled down to a frosty temperature somewhere below 5K (about -271?C) along its entire length, and one by one, large blocks were removed from the path of the beam, allowing it begin making its journey. The first beam traveled at less than full energy in this test run, but will eventually approach light speed when full operations begin.

On 19 September 2008, the operations were halted due to a serious fault between two superconducting bending magnets. The LHC will not be operational again until the summer of 2009.

Despite the multi-billion dollar machine being out of order, the LHC was officially inaugurated on 21 October 2008, in the presence of political leaders, science ministers from CERN’s 20 Member States, CERN officials, and members of the worldwide scientific community.

Newton’s unfinished business...

What is the origin of mass? Why do tiny particles weigh the amount they do? Why do some particles have no mass at all? At present, there are no established answers to these questions. The most likely explanation may be found in the Higgs boson, a key undiscovered particle that is essential for the Standard Model to work.

The ATLAS and CMS experiments will be actively searching for signs of this elusive particle.

  Fears

The LHC has clearly captured the public’s fancy, as the first beams made the front page of many news sources and were celebrated by Google. Nevertheless, its has been the subject of fears from some segments of the general public, who have come to believe that the impact of high energy protons could somehow form a black hole underneath the Swiss countryside, bringing about the demise of planet Earth. Physicists involved in the program have determined there’s no science behind these fears.

The fact that you’re reading it means that fears regarding the Large Hadron Colider (LHC) and the end of the world were a bit overblown.

 Expected results

Once the supercollider is up and running, CERN scientists estimate that if the Standard Model is correct, a single Higgs boson may be produced every few hours. At this rate, it may take up to three years to collect enough data unambiguously to discover the Higgs boson. Similarly, it may take one year or more before sufficient results concerning supersymmetric particles have been gathered to draw meaningful conclusions.

An invisible problem...

Everything we see in the Universe, from an ant to a galaxy, is made up of ordinary particles. These are collectively referred to as matter, forming 4% of the Universe. Dark matter and dark energy are believed to make up the remaining proportion, but they are incredibly difficult to detect and study, other than through the gravitational forces they exert. Investigating the nature of dark matter and dark energy is one of the biggest challenges today in the fields of particle physics and cosmology.

The ATLAS and CMS experiments will look for supersymmetric particles to test a likely hypothesis for the make-up of dark matter.
