Valspeak / Language
Vealspeak?is a slang term adopted to describe the way of speaking used by?valley girls who were stereotypically considered ‘airheards’ interested in shopping, personal appearance and social status only.
Valspeak became popular throughout the?U.S.?during the1970s?and?1980s in?Southern California, specifically the?San Fernando Valley. In some places, it remained common into the?1990s.
Many phrases and elements of Valspeak, along with?surfer slang?and?skateboarding?slang, are stable elements of the?California English?dialect lexicon, and in some cases wider?American English?(such as the widespread use of “like” as a?hedge).
