Tinkling The Ting Tings / Music

добавить комментарий посмотреть в журнальном виде

The Ting Tings are an English pop band, consisting of two members: Jules De Martino (born 1973) (drums, guitar, vocals) and Katie White (born 1983) (vocals, guitar, bass drum). Originally from Leigh, Greater Manchester, they formed in December 2004. They have released 4 singles, including the single “That’s Not My Name” which charted straight at Number 1 in the UK Singles Chart on 18 May 2008. The album We Started Nothing was released on 19 May 2008 and also charted at Number 1 in the UK.

They met when she was just out of being a Wigan school-girl and bonded over a shared ambition to rock the foundations1 of pop music.
Together, Jules and Katie have configured16 a sound that represents the pure heart of British pop. Driven by personality, unstoppable momentum17, friendship and the love of great pop music - however stylised it arrives - The Ting Tings learnt to forget the attention to detail that they had slaved over in Dear Eskiimo and drove their beast on raw18 adrenaline. It is littered19 through their sensational debut album, a record that grips20 on first listen and refuses to dislodge21 from the brain.

is the yin10 to Katie’s yang11. He can appear12 a little more pragmatic than his frontwoman but for the moment that you hear him pounding13 the drums as her musical foil14. Ting Tings are very much a two-way operation. They share lyric and music writing duties. “If it feels right,” he says, “then it goes in, whoever has come up with it.” Jules admits that it was Katie who taught him to accept the pure thrill15 of pop music.

is quite the most unusual front woman you might expect to crossover as the figurehead2 of Manchester’s Bohemian margins3. She’s bluff4 Northern alternate-girl incarnate5. Funny, brassy6, not a boring bone7 in her body and with one ear always cocked8 to the chorus9.

The first public manifestation22 of The Ting Tings singular brilliance came with the independent release of That’s Not My Name, the song that they wrote in direct response to the apathy of the record industry and which doubles up as a classic proto23 feminist pick-up rebuff24. They pressed the record with limited edition, hand done artwork, mirroring the anything goes direction of the band itself. Buzz25 built in the North West and the record sold out in days.
In January 2008 they were voted third in the annual BBC 6 Music poll26 of industry experts Sound of 2008, for acts to emerge in the coming year. In February 2008 they were the opening slot27 act on the 2008 Shockwaves NME Awards Tour, performing with The Cribs, Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong and Does It Offend You, Yeah?.

That’s their name!

The Ting Tings name comes from a Chinese colleague of White’s at a shop who told her the name sounds like the pronunciation of “an old bandstand36” in Mandarin. There are many Chinese characters pronounced “Ting”, the most common one being ‘?’, which means “to listen”. In English “ting” means “tinkle37”.

The first single released on Columbia was “Great DJ”; and hyped28 by magazines such as the NME. Their live set on the In New Music We Trust stage was made available by the BBC’s online video player application iPlayer. The single “Shut Up and Let Me Go” appeared in an iPod commercial in late April 2008, peaking at #55 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band’s debut album, We Started Nothing, was released on 19 May 2008. It was, however, leaked29 onto the internet on 13 May 2008. Shortly after the release of the album, the band released a statement30 on the social network service MySpace which explained to fans that their single “That’s Not My Name” had reached number 1 in the UK Singles Charts, the statement went on to encourage fans to purchase legal copies of the single in order to keep it at the top position for the official Sunday Chart release on 18 May. The band went on to secure31 Number 1 in the UK singles chart on 18 May.
Their singles “Shut Up and Let Me Go” and “We Started Nothing” were featured32 in the Gossip Girl series, while the song “Be the One” was featured in One Tree Hill. Their single “Great DJ” was featured in the theatrical trailer for the critically acclaimed33 Danny Boyle film “Slumdog Millionaire”, in addition to the Anna Faris comedy “The House Bunny”.

The Ting Tings were one of four performers who played small interludes34 consisting of remixes of past hits throughout the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. They also won Best UK Video for their single “Shut Up and Let Me Go”. Other artists who were nominated in the same category included Coldplay, Duffy, Leona Lewis and Estelle.

The Ting Tings intuitive pop house is about propulsive35 energy, positive thinking and smashing up a couple of rules along the way. Who really wouldn’t want a little piece of that?

That’s Not My Name lyrics

Four letter word just to get me along
It’s a difficulty and I’m biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now

Holding back, everyday the same
Don’t wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name
(ame, ame, ame)

They call me ‘hell’
They call me ‘Stacey’
They call me ‘her’
They call me ‘Jane’
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

They call me ‘quiet girl’
But i’m a riot
‘Mary’, ‘Jo-Lisa’
Always the same
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name
That’s not my name

I miss the catch if they threw me the ball
I’m the last kid standing up against the wall
Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now
So alone all the time at night
Lock myself away
Listen to me, i’m not
Although I’m dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name
(ame, ame, ame)

Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?
Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?
